CallerIDTest.com was an online service that allowed users to perform a reverse phone number lookup to see the Caller ID Name (CNAM) associated with any U.S. or Canadian phone number. The primary use case was for businesses and individuals to verify that their own outbound caller ID information was displaying correctly, but it could also be used to identify unknown callers. The service queried the same official CNAM databases used by major telephone carriers to retrieve the name tied to a specific phone number. Although the service is now defunct due to legal challenges, its function of linking phone numbers to names posed significant privacy risks. Exposing the name connected to a phone number could facilitate doxxing, stalking, and harassment by making it easier for malicious actors to identify and target individuals. To protect against such risks, people should be cautious about where they share their phone number online and can utilize services to have their information removed from data broker databases.
